Major Industry of the Region:
At one point, during the early American period, fur trade was the main economic industry in Southeast Alaska. Until numbers of fur bearing animals declined enormously at midcentury, the major industry soon shifted toward forest products. Immediately, pulp mills of Ketchikan and Sitka went into operation (although the pulp mills running in Sitka and Ketchikan are now the only pulp mills running as of the later 20th century.) Sawmills were built and expanded to export lumber based resources to Japan and domestic markets in the lower U.S.
Threats to Major Industry:
Threats to the major industry, timber processing, include that after 1990, the forest supplement reduced amount of lumber offered for sale annually. In 1997, the agency required harvest constraints that resulted in large increasing in cost of harvesting national park forest timber. These two management changes wiped most of remaining timber industry. The current industry employment is about 15% of what it was
Effect on Southeast Alaska from Major Industry:
The Tongass National forest service currently controls about 93% of timberlands in southeast Alaska. Some may say that the forest service has "monopoly power" over lumber supply. Only small amounts of timber resources in southeast Alaska are harvested for local use.

Main Resource of Region:
One of the main resources of southeast Alaska are the marine sources; Salmon were said to be so populated one was able to cross streams by walking on their backs. The number of fisheries grew after first were made in Klawock and Old Sitka, in 1878. Salmon increased and peaked in 1930's and afterward, runs began to decline. Although, fishing still provides a traditional way of life.
Another main resource in the Southeast are the amount of minerals. At the time of 1880, gold was first found in what is now Juneau and Douglas. This finding of gold resulted with increase in population and the capital Sitka moved to Juneau. Copper, lead, silver, zinc, palladium and building stones (i.e. limestone, gypsum and marble) have been found in Southeast Alaska at one point as well.
