Native People/Language:
Much of southeast Alaska's history has been shaped by the Northwest coast Indians: Eyak, Tlinget, Haida and Tsimshians. All the native tribes speak their own language (Tlinget speak Tlinget, Haida speak Haida, e.t.c.) Unfortunately though, there is currently just one living Eyak speaker and as he passes, his language may pass with him.
Cultural traditions of Native People:
The natives were fishermen, hunters, artists and carvers of totem poles that some reached 9 feet tall. These totem poles had amazed the Europeans when they first landed on Southeast Alaska shores. Today, the craftsmen of the region are also known for their handmade dance masks, decorative paddles, button blankets, and woven cedar bark baskets.
Diversity of region/ modern population:
As of 2012, there are 73,500 people who cover the region. Juneau alone, has about 69.7% Caucasian, 0.9% African American, 11.8% American Indian and Alaska Native, 6.1% Asian, 0.7% are native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, 5.1% are Hispanic or Latino, and 9.5% are two or more races.
